Miniature Ball Bearings and Instrument Ball Bearings

PQB Bearings has a huge selection of Miniature Ball Bearings and Instrument Ball Bearings with over 500 types available. Miniature deep groove ball bearings are composed of two rings containing a single row of balls. They have deep raceway grooves and the cage keeps the balls separated. Precision tolerances from ABEC-1 through ABEC-9 are generally available for most miniature products. Typical bore sizes of miniature ball bearings start at 3 mm with an outside diameter a mere 10 mm. Custom-made miniature bearings can have bore sizes as small as 1 mm!

Miniature ball bearings are available in 52100 Chrome Steel materials or alternatively AISI 440 or 420 stainless steel if additional corrosion resistance is required in both inch and metric dimensions. Single row deep groove ball bearings are particularly versatile. They are simple in design, non-separable, suitable for high and very high speeds and are robust in operation, requiring little maintenance. Single row deep groove ball bearings have deep, uninterrupted raceway grooves. These raceway grooves have a close osculation with the balls, enabling the bearings to accommodate radial loads and axial loads in both directions. Miniature bearings are available open or sealed with rubber seals “RS” or metal shields “Z”. Cages are available in sheet-steel, fiber-reinforced plastic and special phenolic material designed for high speed applications.

Chrome steel bearings are not suitable for use in corrosive environments as the steel is not corrosion resistant. Chrome steel miniature bearings are coated with a layer of preservative oil to protect against moisture. We do not recommend using chrome steel bearings without any lubricant (dry) as they are prone to corrosion. This may even occur while in storage or during shipping as a result of condensation forming inside the protective packaging. Protective oil cannot be applied to the outside of a dry bearing as it would find its way inside the bearing making the bearing no longer “dry”.

Most of our chrome steel miniature bearings can be supplied open or with metal shields. The larger sizes may be available with rubber or Teflon contact seals or low friction non-contact rubber seals. Open bearings are supplied with a light oil lubrication. Shielded or sealed bearings are usually supplied with grease lubrication but shielded bearings can be offered with instrument oil for low speed, low friction applications. Thanks to our in-house relubrication facility, these miniature bearings can be offered with customer specified oils, greases or dry lubricants.

The standard cage or retainer for a chrome steel miniature bearing is made from SPCC steel strip. A one-piece crown cage is more common for the smallest and the thinnest bearings due to space constraints. Larger sizes have a two piece ribbon cage. Some sizes are available with a high speed TW nylon crown cage although operating temperatures should be kept under 120°C for this retainer.

Miniature ball bearings are small bearings with balls as their rolling elements. These small bearings have an outside diameter of less than ?” (<9.525 mm) or are small bearings with an outside diameter less than or equal to ½” (≤ 12.7 mm) having a ration of outside diameter to inside diameter equal to or less than two.

Miniature ball bearings are also available with reduced or increased raceway groove clearance from MC1 up to MC6. Miniature bearings are sometimes referred to as instrument bearings or micro bearings or small bearing. Miniature bearings applications include miniature mechanical engineering, electronic and medical devices, miniature engines and dynamic model building, small spindles, dental drills, watches, aerospace, gyros, anemometers, flow meters, miniature gearboxes, small motors and radio controlled modelsand all applications requiring extremely small components.
